Members of the University of Virginia and local communities are invited to gather at Darden Towe Park Saturday at 2:30 p.m. to honor and reflect on the life and legacy of former U.Va. history professor and civil rights leader Julian Bond.
Across the nation, friends and admirers of Bond will organize similar gatherings and, at 3 p.m., release flowers into the water in his honor (see more information here).
Flowers will be provided, or attendees may bring their own to release into the river. The event will occur rain or shine and the area could be muddy. Attendees should dress comfortably and choose footwear accordingly.
Directions: After entering Darden Towe Park, turn left and proceed down the hill toward the boat ramp, passing a small pond on your right. Park at the bottom of the hill in the parking lot. Walk toward the boat ramp on the left side of the parking lot. At the top of the boat ramp, take the short path to the left to join the gathering.
The event is organized by U.Va.’s Office for Diversity and Equity and the Carter G. Woodson Institute for African-American and African Studies.
