Erie tops error-prone Squirrels, 5-2

The Erie SeaWolves (15-24) rode five unearned runs to a, 5-2, victory over the Richmond Flying Squirrels (15-22) on Wednesdaymorning at Jerry Uht Park.  The Squirrels committed a season-high matching four errors as their string of four consecutive series wins was snapped.  The Squirrels did finish their road trip with a winning record (4-3).

The SeaWolves capitalized on an error from Kelby Tomlinson to grab the lead in the second.  Curt Powell reached on the error with one out.  He then advanced to second on a wild-pitch and moved to third when Connor Harrell singled to center field.  Erie grabbed a 1-0 lead when Wade Gaynor bounced into a fielder’s choice.

Richmond got the run right back against right-hander Chad Green in the top of the third.  Javier Herrera led off and trickled a single into center field.  A batter later, Eliezer Zambrano laced a single back through the middle to put runners at the corners.  Tomlinson then pushed a bunt that was played by C. Green to first base.  Herrera scored to tie the game, 1-1.

The Squirrels got sloppy defensively in the fifth and the SeaWolves took advantage to take control of the ballgame.  Connor Harrell started trouble with a single.  He advanced to third on a an error charged to Ricky Oropesa.  Biagini got the first two outs of the inning, but Mitch Delfino committed a throwing error on a groundball from Harold Castro.  That allowed Erie to take a 2-1 lead.  To the SeaWolves credit, they took advantage of the miscues.  Wynton Bernard followed the error with a single before Jason Krizan provided a two-run double.  Dean Green capped the four-run inning with an RBI single as Erie took a 5-1 lead.

Green worked into the seventh inning and conceded back-to-back singles to Delfino and Oropesa.  Devin Harris ground into a double-play, but Herrera knocked home Delfino with a single to center field.

Green (2-5) was charged with two earned runs on six hits across 6 2/3 innings.  He did not walk a batter, struck out five and earned his second win of the season.

Biagini (2-3) took the loss over six innings.  He was charged with five runs, none of them earned.  He conceded a season-high matching eight hits, walked none and struck out four.

Right-hander Jeff Ferrell finished the win for Erie working 2 1/3 scoreless innings.

The Squirrels enjoy an off day on Thursday before opening a four-game home series against the Bowie Baysox (Baltimore Orioles) at The Diamond on Friday night.  The opener is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.  The Flying Squirrels Pregame Warmup will begin at 6:35 p.m. on Fox Sports 910 and FoxSportsRichmond.com.
