Drivers woke up Saturday morning with heavy dust, or dirty rain, covering vehicles in Virginia and West Virginia.

Car washes had long lines throughout the region as a result of the sudden and unexpected dirt storm.

The “dirt” originated in west Texas, according to Thomas Kines, a senior meteorologist at AccuWeather.

Many people reported watching the dust fall from the sky like rain throughout the two states.

“There have been dust storms in west Texas the past few days, and this dust was transported into our neck of the woods on southwest winds,” Kines said.

“Since yesterday morning, the wind has been west and northwest, instead of southwest, so the threat of having more dust on the cars has greatly diminished.”
