Del. Sam Rasoul’s Truth in Donating Act passes House

Rasoul HeadshotDelegate Sam Rasoul (D-Roanoke)’s HB1860, known as the Truth in Donating Act, was passed Tuesday in the Virginia House of Delegates with broad bipartisan support.

The bill would protect Virginians from unknowingly donating to organizations posing as charitable groups, requiring any person or group operating for profit to clearly portray themselves as such.

“The Truth in Donating Act will help the many generous Virginians who are kind enough to donate items to charitable organizations,” said Rasoul.  “They have the right to know where their donations are going, and this bill increases that transparency.”

“Furthermore, charities rely on these donations to help people in our communities.  These nonprofits provide valuable services to people, such as job training and placement for veterans.  People should not be misled into thinking that they are contributing to these services or making a tax-deductible donation when that’s not the case,” he added.

The bill will now be considered by the Senate side of the Virginia General Assembly.
