Most highway construction and maintenance work will be suspended during the Independence Day holiday weekend. Temporary work zones and lane closures will be lifted between noon on Thursday, July 3 and noon on Monday, July 7. Long-term work zones and lane closures that cannot be safely opened to traffic will remain in place.
The following highway work is scheduled; weather permitting, in the Culpeper District during the upcoming week. Traffic movements may be restricted and speed limits reduced in work zones. Items in italics contain new or updated information.

Albemarle County
Routes 22, 29, 52, 250 – Bridge deck washing on various structures between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. Motorists should expect lane closures with traffic through the work zone controlled by flaggers; expect brief delays.
Route 250 (Richmond Road) – Repairs to storm drainage structures. Shoulder closures and intermittent lane closures with traffic controlled by flaggers. Motorists should be alert as they approach the work zone and expect brief delays.
Routes 20, 22, 53, 231, 250 – Debris removal. Motorists should expect lane closures with traffic controlled by flaggers through the work zone and brief delays. Be alert for crews and equipment working along the roadway shoulders and close to the travel lanes.
Route 631 (Fifth Street) – Deck repairs on the bridge over Interstate 64 between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. Motorists should expect alternating lane closures with traffic controlled by flaggers through the work zone and brief delays.
Route 680 (Browns Gap Turnpike) – Closed from 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Wednesday for a pipe replacement at Will Woods Branch. The road will be open to traffic on both sides of the work zone. Motorists should detour using Route 810 (Boonesville Road) to Route 811 (Bearwood Road) and back to Route 680.
Routes 640, 649, 672, 679 – Pavement patching. Motorists should expect to encounter equipment and workers in the roadway and along the shoulders. Slow down as you approach the work zone and be alert for directional signs and flaggers controlling traffic. Expect brief delays.
Paving operations between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on the following roads. Traffic will be reduced to one lane controlled by flaggers. Motorists should drive with caution through the work zone and be aware of workers near the open travel lane. Expect minor delays.
- Route 626 (Langhorne Road) from the Nelson County line to Route 627(Green Mountain Road)
- Route 627 from Route 6 (Irish Road) to Route 626
- Route 726 (James River Road) from Route 627 to Route 6
Routes 631, 643, 649, 660, 663, 664, 743 – Mowing and roadside trimming. Motorists should be aware of mobile work zones and slow-moving equipment along the road shoulders. Reduce speed and follow traffic controls. Brief delays are possible.
Routes 20, 618, 630, 631, 640, 667, 668, 708, 712, 713, 716, 717, 719, 721, 743, 746, 784, 795, 808 – Machining and grading gravel roads. Motorists should be alert for mobile work zones and slow-moving equipment working in the roadway; brief delays possible.
Route 708 (Dry Bridge Road) – Closed to through traffic at the railroad bridge for construction of a new bridge and approaches. Traffic will be detoured via Route 787 (Gillums Ridge Road). The bridge will remain closed until the project is completed in September.
City of Charlottesville
Route 302 (Copeley Road) – Deck repairs on the bridge over Buckingham Branch Railroad between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. on Sunday. Motorists should expect alternating lane closures with traffic controlled by flaggers through the work zone and brief delays.
Town of Culpeper
Route 15/29 Business (Madison Highway) – Construction of roundabout at Route 229 (Main Street). A new traffic pattern is in effect using a temporary signal. All traffic on Route 15/29 will follow signs to an intersection with Route 229 east of the current signal. Traffic headed north on Route 229 will turn left onto the temporary lane.
The northbound and southbound lanes will be limited to one lane of traffic within 1,000 feet of the intersection between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Friday. Motorists should expect minor delays, reduce speed and follow traffic controls.
Route 229 (Main Street) – Construction of roundabout at Route 15/29 Business (Madison Highway). A new traffic pattern is in effect. All traffic on Route 229 will follow signs to a temporary traffic signal east of the current signal.
Lane closures will occur from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday–Thursday and 7 a.m. to 3:30
p.m. Friday. Motorists should expect minor delays, reduce speed and follow traffic controls.
Fauquier County
Routes 17 (James Madison Highway), 245 (Old Tavern Road) – Special event at Great Meadow on Friday, July 4. Motorists should be alert for changes in traffic patterns on both roads and expect significant congestion in the area through the day and evening. Slow down as you approach the area and be alert for traffic direction from law enforcement and directional signs.
Route 28 (Catlett Road) – Mowing on shoulders, intersections and crossovers. Tractors and other equipment will be shadowed by trucks marking the mobile work zone; motorists should be alert as they approach those vehicles and watch for slow-moving equipment along the road shoulders. Reduce speed and follow traffic controls. Brief delays are possible.
Route 17 (Winchester Road) – Culvert repairs one-half mile north of Route 823 (Spring Mill Road). Most work will be done on the median strip and along the road shoulders, but there may be intermittent off-peak hour northbound lane closures.
Route 29 (James Madison Highway) – Culvert repairs 0.15 mile north of the Route 17 intersection at Opal. Work will continue through the week but no traffic impacts are expected since repairs will be done in the median and on the shoulders.
Fluvanna County
Routes 601, 604, 610, 624, 638, 650, 653, 654, 656, 663 – Mowing on shoulders and median strips. Motorists should be aware of mobile work zones and slow-moving equipment along the road shoulders. Reduce speed and follow traffic controls. Brief delays are possible.
Route 6 (East River Road) – Replacement of the bridge over the Rivanna River. Contractor is continuing site-clearing work and will begin installation of shoring materials at the bridge abutments. Some work will require temporary lane closures with traffic controlled by flaggers. Motorists should be alert for traffic controls as they approach the area.
Route 6 (West River Road) – Replacement of the bridge over the Hardware River. Contractor is excavating on both sides of the river and beginning construction of the new bridge on the east side of the river. Some work will require temporary lane closures with traffic controlled by flaggers. Motorists should be alert for traffic controls as they approach the area.
Greene County
Route 609 (Fredericksburg Road) – Road closed to through traffic just east of Route 619 (Dundee Road) for a culvert replacement. The road will remain open to traffic on both sides of the work zone. Motorists should follow detours or use alternate routes of travel. The road will reopen on Thursday.
Routes 629 (Welsh Run Road), 633 (Amicus Road), 743 (Advance Mills Road) – Mowing along shoulders and intersections. Motorists should be aware of mobile work zones and slow-moving equipment along the road shoulders. Reduce speed and follow traffic controls. Brief delays are possible.
Routes 637 (Pocosan Mountain Road), 642 (Entry Run Road) – Machining and grading gravel roads. Motorists should be alert for mobile work zones and slow-moving equipment working in the roadway; brief delays possible.
Routes 607 (Cedar Grove Road), 609 – Maintenance of drainage ditches. Motorists should be alert for mobile work zones and slow-moving equipment working along the shoulders and in the roadway; brief delays possible.
Routes 609, 637 (Octonia Road) – Pavement patching. Motorists should expect to encounter equipment and workers in the roadway and along the shoulders. Slow down as you approach the work zone and be alert for directional signs and flaggers controlling traffic. Expect brief delays.
Louisa County
Route 208 (Courthouse Road) — Paving and pavement marking between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. from Route 688 (Holland Creek Road) to Route 640 (Jack Jouett Road). Traffic will be reduced to one lane controlled by flaggers. Motorists should drive with caution through the work zone and be aware of workers near the open travel lane. Expect minor delays.
Route 522 (Zachary Taylor Highway) – Maintenance of roadway shoulders and drainage ditches. Motorists should be alert for mobile work zones and slow-moving equipment working along the shoulders and in the roadway. Be alert for traffic controls as you approach the work zone; brief delays possible.
Route 709 (Blueberry Lane) – Rural Rustic Road project that involves improvement of a gravel road to a hard-surface roadway. Motorists should expect to encounter equipment and workers in the roadway and along the shoulders. Slow down as you approach the work zone and be alert for directional signs and flaggers controlling traffic. Expect brief delays.
Routes 613 (Poindexter Road), 692 (Hickory Creek Road) – Mowing along shoulders, intersections and crossovers. Motorists should be aware of mobile work zones and slow-moving equipment along the road shoulders. Reduce speed and follow traffic controls. Brief delays are possible.
Madison County
Shoulder work between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on the following roads. Traffic will be reduced to one lane controlled by flaggers and a pilot truck. Expect minor delays.
- Route 600 (Bohannon Road) from dead end to Route 707 (Nethers Road)
- Route 602 (Nethers Road) from Route 231 (Blue Ridge Turnpike) to the Rappahannock County line
Rappahannock County
