The following highway work is scheduled, weather permitting, in the Culpeper District during the upcoming week. Traffic movements may be restricted and speed limits reduced in work zones. (NEW) or (UPDATE) indicate revisions since last week’s report.

Rio Road grade-separated intersection – The intersection is open to traffic. Motorists should follow overhead and ground-mounted signs to guide them through the project area. Sunday through Friday the following overnight lane closures will be in effect.
On Route 29 north and south of the Rio Road intersection:
- Between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday through Friday, there will be at least one lane open both northbound and southbound
- All business entrances will remain open during business hours
- Turning movements at the Rio Road signal, including left turns and U-turns, may be restricted between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.
On Rio Road east and west of Route 29:
- Between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., the crossover, U-turn and left-turn movements from Rio Road onto Route 29 and from Route 29 onto Rio Road may be restricted
- All business entrances will remain open during business hours
During the overnight closures additional detour signs, cones and other traffic controls will direct motorists through the work zone. The speed limit remains 35 mph at all times. The nighttime work will continue for the next several months.
Route 29 widening – Construction continues along the roadway shoulders between Route 643 (Polo Grounds Road) and Route 1719 (Towncenter Drive). Travel lanes are narrowed and shoulders are closed within the work zone and the speed limit is reduced to 40 mph. Expect intermittent single lane closures Monday through Friday between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Motorists should remain alert and use caution through the work zone.
Berkmar Drive Extended – Bridge construction may require brief, intermittent closures of Rio Mills Road between Route 29 and Millers Cottage Lane while materials are delivered. On Towncenter Drive in the vicinity of the roundabout, motorists should be alert for dump trucks and other equipment entering and exiting the roadway.
Hillsdale Drive Extended – Obey traffic controls and expect minor delays on Hillsdale Drive, Hydraulic Road, India Road, Zan Road, Greenbrier Drive, Pepsi Place and Seminole Court. For project updates, visit http://hillsdaledrive.org.
Albemarle County
(NEW) Route 29 (Seminole Trail) – Utility company performing cable work at Route 1600 (Boulders Road). Brief traffic stop scheduled between 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, weather permitting. Motorists should expect a 10-minute delay in both directions.
Interstate 64 – Installation of infrastructure and devices for active traffic management system on Afton Mountain. Shoulder closures in both directions between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday from mile marker 107 (Crozet exit) to mile marker 94 in Augusta County. Motorists should use caution approaching the work zone. Anticipated completion in October.
(NEW) Interstate 64 – Mowing operations in both directions between mile markers 124 and 130. Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., intermittent lane closures are possible while equipment navigates across bridges and around guardrail.
(NEW) Route 654 (Barracks Road) – Sidewalk, curb and ramp work at various locations westbound between Route 250 interchange and Route 656 (Georgetown Road). Monday through Thursday during daytime hours, expect intermittent lane closures controlled by flagging.
(NEW) Route 677 (Old Ballard Road) – Bridge inspection near Route 250 (Ivy Road). Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., traffic reduced to one lane controlled by flagging.
Route 782 (Stribling Avenue Extended) – Construction company performing electrical duct bank work. Motorists should obey traffic controls.
Culpeper County
Route 3 (Germanna Highway) – Roadway widening to four lanes. Clearing, excavation, utility relocation and roadway construction will occur along the route from Stevensburg to Lignum. Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., stay alert for intermittent lane closures from 0.9 mile west of Route 663 (Stevensburg Rd.) to Route 669 (Carrico Mills Road). Traffic will be controlled by flagging. Speed limit reduced to 45 mph in the work zone. Motorists should be alert for workers near the travel lanes and for trucks entering and exiting the highway.
(UPDATE) Route 29 (James Madison Highway) – Construction of new interchange at Route 666 (Braggs Corner Road). New traffic pattern in effect. Route 721 (Poor Farm Road) is now accessed via Route 666 (Greens Corner Way)/Cyclone Way intersection. Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., intermittent lane closures will occur on Route 29 and Route 666. Speed limit reduced to 35 mph on Route 666 and to 50 mph on Route 29 through the work zone. Anticipated completion August 2017.
Route 29 (James Monroe Highway) – Constructing restricted crossing U-turn intersection at Route 718 (Mountain Run Lake Road). The median crossover is closed at Route 718, restricting all left-turn movements at the intersection. Motorists detoured via Route 1250 (Granite Boulevard). Monday through Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., intermittent single lane closures will be in place in both directions between Route 29 Business and Route 1250 (Park Ridge Drive). Motorists should use caution traveling through the work zone and obey traffic controls. Anticipated completion January 2017.
Route 229 (North Main Street) – Roadway widening to four lanes. Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., occasional lane closures with flagging will occur through the work zone. Stay alert for workers near the travel lanes and for trucks entering and exiting the highway. Anticipated completion August 2017.
Route 522 (Sperryville Pike) – Roadway widening in association with the Route 784 (Western Outer Loop/Ira Hoffman Lane) project. Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., occasional lane closures with flagging will occur from Route 641 (Gibson Mill Road) to Route 763 (Saint Jameson Road).
(UPDATE) Various routes – Roadway resurfacing at the locations listed below. Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., traffic reduced to one lane controlled by flagging and pilot truck. Obey traffic controls.
- Route 732 (Halls Road) from the dead end to Route 610.
- Route 1090 (Burwell Court) from the cul de sac to Route 732.
- Route 1091 (Krom Court) from the cul de sac to Route 1090.
- Route 1106 (Stallion Road) from Route 692 to Route 1107.
- Route 1107 (Equestrian Lane) from Route 1106 to Route 1108.
- Route 1108 (Martingale Court) from the cul de sac to Route 1107.
- Route 1116 (Brandy Fizz Court) from Route 1106 to the cul de sac.
Fauquier County
(NEW) Route 17 (Marsh Road) – Mowing operations in both directions from Fauquier County line to Interstate 66. Expect intermittent lane closures Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Route 28 (Catlett Road) – Shoulder repairs from Route 616 (Casanova Road) to Route 806 (Elk Run Road). Monday throughThursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., expect intermittent northbound lane closures controlled by flagging.
(NEW) Route 29 (James Madison Highway) – Mowing operations in both directions from Culpeper County line to Route 215 (Vint Hill Road). Expect intermittent lane closures Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
(UPDATE) Route 245 (Old Tavern Road) – Rehabilitating bridge over Broad Run. New traffic pattern in effect Monday. A temporary traffic signal will control two-way traffic through the work zone. Road closed to through traffic Friday. Interstate 66 traffic attempting to access Route 245 will need to use Route 17 business (Winchester Road) north and turn right on Route 55 (John Marshall Highway), which carries traffic back to Route 245. Motorists should obey traffic controls and use caution traveling through the work zone.
(NEW) Route 611 (Sowego Road) – Tree trimming from Route 806 (Elk Run Road) to Route 612 (Brent Town Road). Tuesdayand Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., traffic reduced to one lane controlled by flagging.
(UPDATE) Route 639 (Cromwell Road) – Tree trimming from Route 616 (Bristerburg Road) to Route 612 (Brent Town Road).Thursday and Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., traffic reduced to one lane controlled by flagging.
(NEW) Route 647 (Crest Hill Road) – Culvert replacements between Route 721 (Free State Road) and Route 635 (Hume Road). Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., road closed to through traffic. Motorists advised to follow detour.
Fluvanna County
Route 15 (James Madison Highway) – Construction of roundabout at Route 53 (Thomas Jefferson Parkway). Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., motorists can expect intermittent lane closures controlled by flagging. Anticipated completion August 2017.
Route 15 (James Madison Highway) – Shoulder repairs from Route 695 (Creasy Town Road) to Route 655 (West Bottom Road). Monday through Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., intermittent lane closures are possible.
(NEW) Route 250 (Richmond Road) – Paving operations from Route 600 (Paynes Mill Road) to Route 689 (Edgecomb Road).Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., traffic reduced to one lane controlled by flagging.
Greene County
(NEW) Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) – Tree trimming from Greene County line to Route 810 (Dyke Road) from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Use caution in work zone.
Louisa County
(NEW) Interstate 64 – Mowing operations in both directions between mile markers 130 and 148. Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., intermittent lane closures are possible while equipment navigates across bridges and around guardrail.
(NEW) Various Routes – Sidewalk and ramp work at the locations listed below. Thursday and Friday during daytime hours, expect intermittent lane closures controlled by flagging.
- Route 669 (Ellisville Drive) at Route 666 (West Street).
- Route 1004 (Rosewood Avenue) at Route 1009 Wookfolk Avenue.
Route 33 (Jefferson Highway) – Utility company performing communications cable work from Route 767 (School Bus Road) to the Hanover County line. Shoulder closures and intermittent lane closures with flagging. Use caution when traveling near the work zone.
Route 609 (Buckner Road) – Rehabilitating bridge over Long Creek. Route 609 closed to through traffic. Southbound motorists will be detoured west on Route 612 (Halls Store Road) to Route 33 (Jefferson Highway), and then east on Route 648 (Jouett School Road), which carries traffic back to Route 609. Northbound traffic will reverse the detour. Anticipated completion Nov.18.
Madison County
(NEW) Route 29 (Seminole Trail) – Bridge inspection in both directions over Robinson River near Route 636 (River Road). Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., traffic reduced to one lane controlled by flagging.
Route 230 (Wolftown-Hood Road) – Rehabilitating the bridge over the Conway River. A temporary traffic signal is in place to control two-way traffic through the work zone. Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., expect lane closures in both directions between the Greene County line and Route 666 (Pea Ridge Road). Motorists should obey traffic controls, use caution traveling through the work zone and expect minor delays. Anticipated completion November 2017.
(NEW) Route 616 (Carpenters Mill Road) – Roadway resurfacing from Route 634 (Oak Park Road)/Route 626 (Oneals Road) intersection to Route 230 (Orange Road). Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., traffic reduced to one lane controlled by flagging and pilot truck.
(NEW) Route 616 (Locust Grove Church Road) – Roadway resurfacing from Route 620 (Tatums School Road) to Route 621 (Beautiful Run Road). Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., traffic reduced to one lane controlled by flagging and pilot truck.
Orange County
(NEW) Route 3 (Germanna Highway) – Eastbound signal repair at Route 601 (Flat Run Road). Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., traffic reduced to one lane. Use caution in work zone.
(NEW) Route 15 (Madison Road) – Milling and paving sections northbound from Route 721 (Barnetts Ford Road) to Route 674 (Little Skyline Drive). Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., traffic reduced to one lane.
(NEW) Route 15 (Madison Road) – Milling and paving southbound from Route 639 (Chicken Mountain Road) to just south of Route 702 (Pickett Road). Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., traffic reduced to one lane.
(NEW) Route 629 (Orange Springs Road) – Milling, paving and line painting southbound from Route 522 (Zachary Taylor Highway) to Route 669 (Marquis Road). Monday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., traffic reduced to one lane controlled by flagging.
(NEW) Route 1012 (Depot Street) – Railroad crossing repairs in Gordonsville. 7 a.m. Tuesday to 5 p.m. Wednesday, road closed to through traffic. Motorists trying to access Depot Street should stay on Main Street and use Route 1022 (Cobb Street) to navigate around the closure.
Rappahannock County
(NEW) Route 628 (Fodderstack Road) – Rehabilitating the bridge over the Rush River. Road closed to through traffic. Northbound motorists will travel east on Route 211 Business (Warren Avenue), left on Route 211 (Lee Highway) and left on Route 522 (Zachary Taylor Highway), which carries traffic back to Fodderstack Road. Southbound motorists should reverse the detour. Anticipated completion November 11.
(UPDATE) Route 636 (Schoolhouse Road) – Pavement marking from Route 9917 (Rappahannock County Elementary School) to Route 211 (Lee Highway). Monday and Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., traffic reduced to one lane controlled by flagging and pilot truck.
