The Commonwealth Transportation Board this week awarded a $10.1 million contract to widen Port Republic Road in Rockingham County to Branch Highways Inc. of Roanoke.

The project will widen the road near the new Rockingham Memorial Hospital. The project extends from just south of Route 704 (Boyers Road) to just north of the Harrisonburg eastern corporate limits.

Port Republic Road will have four 12-foot lanes with curb and gutter and include a 16-foot raised median. Crossovers and turn lanes will be provided at all major intersections. Additionally 0.20-mile of the southeast connector will be built at its intersection with Port Republic Road. Pedestrian and bicycle accommodations include a multi-use path for bicycles and pedestrians on the east side of the road and a sidewalk on the west side of the road.

The scheduled completion date is Jan. 27, 2012.
