Peter Lalich won’t be making the trip with his UVa. football teammates to Connecticut this weekend.

“We stand by Peter and in talking with him have made a decision which is best in the short term for him, the team, and our University. We have a strong set of standards and values on our team that reflect those of the University and we do not compromise those values to win football games,” coach Al Groh said in announcing the news that Lalich would not be making the jaunt northeast on Saturday.

The news came in the form of a media release that did not specify if Lalich was being suspended from the team or even what the reason for Groh’s decision not to take him on the road might be. Several news organizations reported late last week that Lalich was facing charges related to the alleged violation of his probation from an earlier arrest for underage possession of alcohol.

A court date has been set for Sept. 26, the day before UVa.’s ACC opener at Duke.

“Coach Groh and I have frequent conversations, and we agree on this,” Lalich said in a statement released by the school. “I appreciate that Coach sees me first as a person, then as a quarterback. I make mistakes like everyone, but I have followed the terms of my probation, and I am committed to our team and the University of Virginia,” Lalich said.

Marc Verica will get the start at UConn. on Saturday. It will be the first career start for the redshirt sophomore.
