Bryce Harper made it interesting for Nationals fans in the ninth, but Clayton Kershaw was just too much on Saturday, striking out 14 in eight shutout innings as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated Washington, 4-2.
Kershaw (7-6, 2.68 ERA) gave up three hits and didn’t walk a batter. He struck out Harper three times before yielding the ball to reliever Kenley Jansen, who gave up a one-out single to Emmanuel Burriss before facing Harper.
Harper’s moon shot to right bounced off the façade in the upper deck. Dodgers right fielder Yasiel Puig didn’t even move from his spot in right as the ball bounded back to the field.
It was Harper’s 27th homer of the season, but that was all the offense the Nats would get.
Doug Fister (3-5, 4.30 ERA) took the loss, giving up four runs on nine hits in five innings, striking out one and walking two.
