The City of Charlottesville was recently ranked third out of 11 Virginia cities ranked in the 2016 Human Rights Campaign Municipal Equality Index.
According to the HRC, the MEI “examines how inclusive municipal laws, policies, and services are of the LGBTQ people who live and work there. Cities are rated based on non-discrimination laws, the municipality as an employer, municipal services, law enforcement and the city leadership’s public position on equality.”
“I’m delighted that Charlottesville was ranked #3 among Virginia localities by Human Rights First for our progress on LGBTQ equality,” said Mayor Mike Signer. “Like many Virginians, this issue is especially close to my heart, as my sister, her wife, and their two daughters are members of the community. I passionately believe if we’re to be a World-Class City, we must strive to be welcoming to everyone. We still have more work to do, but this recognition shows we are moving in the right direction.”
This is the first year the City of Charlottesville has been included in the MEI.
