A black cat found near the Rivanna Trail in Charlottesville has tested positive for rabies, according to results received Wednesday night.

The Blue Ridge Health District issued a public health alert seeking to identify anyone who had contact with a black cat in the area on Nov. 3 or 4.

The cat was captured Nov. 4 after exhibiting aggressive behavior near the Free Bridge, or 1400 block of Long Street, in the vicinity of River Road and Belleview Avenue.

Anyone who may have had contact with a black cat in these areas, particularly if they were bitten, scratched or exposed to the cat’s saliva, is urged to take immediate action.

If you believe you were exposed, contact the Charlottesville/Albemarle Health Department at (434) 972-6219 as soon as possible to assess your risk and determine if post-exposure treatment is needed.
