The Carolina Mudcats hammered the Potomac Nationals to the tune of 11-1 at Five County Stadium on Monday night. Jesus Aguilar of Carolina had four of the 15 hits for the Mudcats with six RBI including two homers.
The Mudcats opened the scoring off of Potomac starter Trevor Holder in the first inning. With one out, the Mudcats hit four straight singles to take a 2-0 lead with Aguilar knocking the first run of the game in.
The second was biggest inning of the game for Carolina in a contest where they scored in seven of eight innings. Giovanny Urshela knocked his second of three hits an RBI double to extend the lead to 3-0. Aguilar knocked a homer just fair down the left field line to increase the Mudcats advantage to 5-0.
After Carolina added another run in the third, Urshela hit a home run to increase the lead to 7-0 for Carolina. It was his fifth home run of the season with the Mudcats.
Potomac got on the board in the sixth inning with Ricky Hague hitting a lead off triple off the wall in left and David Freitas driving in Hague with a single to decrease the Mudcats advantage to 7-1.
Aguilar struck again with a two-run blast in the sixth inning to make it 9-1 in favor of Carolina. The homer to left was his 11th of the season.
The scoring wasn’t over for Carolina with Ronny Rodriguez hitting a solo shot in the seventh inning and Aguilar with a double down the line that plated the 11th and final run for Carolina.
Mudcats starter Danny Salazar went just four scoreless innings giving up two hits. He was replaced by Jordan Cooper (4-3) who picked up the win by tossing three innings giving up one run. Holder (5-3) took the loss giving up a season-high eight runs all earned which also ties a career high. The 12 hits by Carolina off of Holder is a career-high yielded by three hits. The game marked the first time since May 25th Holder has given up more than two earned runs in a start.
Potomac has yielded double digit run totals in three of the five games during this road trip.
