Grief Share Group: Melissa Morris, social worker with Gentle Shepherd Hospice, facilitates a Grief Share Group every first Thursday of the month at 10:45 a.m.

This program provides seniors with an opportunity to discuss feelings related to various losses they may have experienced in the past several years such as loss of independence, divorce, death, or loss of a pet.

Members have discovered this time to be beneficial as they enjoy Melissa’s gentle, encouraging approach!

New Fitness Programs at SSC: Come and check out the new and expanded fitness programs at SSC! Travel With Us to the Andes: Let Dr. Bob Weiss take you to the Andes Mountains without ever leaving your chair! Come and travel with us on Thursday, January 26 at 10:30 a.m., experiencing “Adventures in the Andes: Machu Picchu and More”. Enjoy the scenery and wildlife of southern Africa as Bob presents yet another travelogue through the countries of South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Namibia to be featured on Thursday, March 29 at 10:30 a.m.

Local Author Series Continues: Meet author Charles A. (Bucky) Welsh of Stuarts Draft as the local authors series continues at SSC! On Tuesday, January 31 at 12:15 p.m., Charles will present “Treasures from the Attic”, his father’s letters from WWII. This author will be speaking about his father’s life and how he came to write this tribute to his father, and Charles will also be reading excerpts from the book during the presentation.

Kids and Pets: If you enjoy animals or children, you can often find one or the other at SSC!

The Center enjoys an exciting partnership with Grace Christian School in which second-graders arrive every second Friday prepared to enthusiastically entertain with song, play games, or read books with members. SSC is also pursuing a partnership with Stuart Hall, a nearby private school, so watch for further announcements of their coming.

Keith and Liz Mauer delight dog lovers periodically with their certified therapy dogs Emma and Toby, and from time to time nursing student Kristen Breem provides SSC members the opportunity to cuddle with our furry friends from the Harrisonburg SPCA as well.

Fabric Crafts at SSC: Brenda Bruce’s trendy fabric crafts will again be in the line-up for spring activities here at SSC beginning on Friday, March 16, 2012 at 9:30. Meeting each Friday morning thereafter (unless otherwise announced), Brenda and her capable assistant Joan will present the ever popular tea towels, pillow cases and May flower basket along with yo-yo flowers and a spring quilt to donate to a charity, all with a lovely spring flair!

Since many of the projects are no-sew, folks of all levels of expertise can enjoy the creativity involved. The fellowship around the table amongst members, Brenda, and Joan is sometimes the best part of all!
