Senior quarterback Willie Logan tossed a career-high four interceptions and the Bridgewater College football team dropped its fourth straight contest as the Washington and Lee Generals posted a 42-13 victory over the Eagles on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.
Washington and Lee (4-3, 2-2 ODAC) received the opening kickoff and wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Tailback Marshall Hollerith bolted in from the nine-yard line to cap off a 12-play Washington and Lee drive to hand the Generals a 7-0 lead with under 10 minutes to play in the first quarter.
The Eagles responded with a clock-chewing drive of their own. Bridgewater (3-4, 0-4 ODAC) marched into the Washington and Lee redzone before the drive stalled out on the W&L 19, forcing a Chandler DeHaven field goal attempt. DeHaven split the uprights on the 36 yard kick to trim the Generals’ lead to 7-3 with four and change remaining in the opening frame.
After the DeHaven field goal, the Generals moved back into Bridgewater territory as the clock expired on the first quarter. Washington and Lee moved to the Bridgewater one on a Nick Lombardo carry to bring up a fourth and goal. Hollerith punched the ball in from the one on the next play, capping off an 18-play drive to hand Washington and Lee a 14-3 lead with 12:42 to play in the first half.
The back-and-forth affair continued on the next drive as a 58-yard Cliff Woodard kick return set the Eagles up with excellent field position to start the next possession. Following three straight runs to open the drive, the Eagles stared down a fourth and two at the Washington and Lee 27, forcing head coach Michael Clark to call a timeout. Out of the stoppage, Logan bolted 27 yards to the endzone to cut the W&L lead to 14-10 with 10 and change remaining in the second stanza.
Washington and Lee added a score on a quick drive as Evan Hinkle stormed in from the seven to build a 21-10 Generals lead with 8:10 remaining in the opening half of play.
After a pair of punts, the two teams would struggle to hold on to the ball over the remainder of the first half as Logan was intercepted on three straight possessions and the Generals tossed an interception and committed a fumble as the game headed to the intermission at a 21-10 Washington and Lee advantage.
Out of the intermission, the Eagles again used an extensive drive to get into the Washington and Lee redzone before things stalled out inside of the 10. DeHaven punched a 23-yard field goal through the uprights to cut the Washington and Lee lead to 21-13 with 7:53 to play in the third quarter.
Both teams settled in on the defensive side of the ball over the remainder of the third quarter as the score remained at a 21-13 Washington and Lee lead as the game shifted to the fourth quarter.
Bridgewater committed a pair of turnovers in the fourth quarter, including a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown as Washington and Lee scored 21 fourth-quarter points to run away to a 42-13 victory over the Eagles.
Logan struggled to a 17-of-31 effort, tossing four interceptions along the way to a 158 yard effort through the air. Sophomore Ross Rushing finished the day 0-for-4 with an interception, while junior Matt Pisarchik turned in a 3-for-8 effort for 41 yards.
On the ground, Logan rushed for a team-high 76 yards on 11 carries and the Luray, Va. native added a touchdown run in the loss.
Senior Cassidy Burns hauled in five passes for 53 yards, while Shawn Lee added three catches for a game-high 56 yards.
Defensively, linebacker Andrew Palmer posted a game-high 13 tackles, including a half-tackle for a loss.
Hollerith turned in a career day with 93 yards and three scores on 16 carries. Lombardo added 92 yards on 14 carries while Austin Eisenhofer rushed for 90 yards on nine carries and added a score as the Generals rushed for 372 yards on the day.
Washington and Lee attempted two passes on the afternoon without a completion.
Defensive back Mitchell Thompson posted 11 tackles including 1.5 for a loss.
Bridgewater is back in action on Saturday when it travels to Emory & Henry for a matchup with the Wasps. Kickoff from Fred Selfe Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
