Three Bridgewater College seniors received Daniel W. Bly–Lamar B. Neal History and Political Science awards from the department of history and political science at the annual awards convocation on May 1.
Caroleigh Aaron Newman of Martinsville, Va., Luke Roadcap of Waynesboro, Va., and Dudley Strosnider of Lynchburg, Va., received the Bly–Neal awards. Named for former Bridgewater College professors Daniel W. Bly, assistant professor of history emeritus, and Lamar B. Neal, associate professor of political science and history emeritus, the awards recognize outstanding performance by graduating seniors.
Each award winner received a book. Newman received Destiny of the Republic: a Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President by Candice Millard. Roadcap’s book was The President’s Club: Inside the World’s Most Exclusive Fraternity by Nancy Gibbs and Michael Duffy. Strosnider received Ghosts of Empire: Britain’s Legacies in the Modern World by Kwasi Kwarteng.
Newman, a history and political science major, is the daughter of Leon and Linda Newman of Martinsville. Roadcap, a history and political major, is the son of Roger and Mary Roadcap of Waynesboro and Strosnider, a history major with a minor in crime and justice, is the daughter of Rhonda Stinnett of Lynchburg and Mark Strosnider.
Newman and Roadcap were also named George C. Marshall Scholars. The awards are given to participants in the Marshall Scholars program directed by the George C. Marshall Foundation at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Va. Newman’s paper was “Promoting the Plan: Selling the Marshall Plan to Congress and the American Public.” Roadcap’s paper was “The Maintenance of Empire through the Marshall Plan.”
Bridgewater College is a private, four-year liberal arts college located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Founded in 1880, it was the state’s first private, coeducational college. Today, Bridgewater College is home to nearly 1,700 undergraduate students.
