Bowie snags series opener with Richmond Flying Squirrels

The Bowie Baysox turned three double plays and outlasted the Richmond Flying Squirrels by a final of 4-2 in the series opener on Monday at Prince George’s Stadium. Bowie (10-7) out-hit Richmond (12-6) by a tally of 10-7. Dylan Davis smashed his fourth home run of the year for the Flying Squirrels in the loss.

The Squirrels applied pressure right away against Bowie and starting RHP Mathew Grimes. A pair of walks and a base hit loaded the bases in the first inning before Grimes induced a pop up and double play to end the threat.

Dylan Davis powered the Squirrels to a 1-0 lead in the second inning. With one out, Davis smashed his fourth home run of the season over the left field wall. It was the second home run in four games for Davis. Dillon Dobson followed with a base hit into right, but Grimes picked up another double play to end the inning.

Richmond hit into three double plays through the first three innings of play on Monday.

Bowie quickly tied the game in the bottom of the second, doing so on a solo home run as well. Catcher Martin Cervenka lined a Jordan Johnson 1-0 pitch over the left field wall, tying the game, 1-1.

Grimes managed to maneuver through four innings in a spot start for the Baysox. The righty, making his first start of the season, allowed the one run on four hits. He walked three and struck out one on 64 pitches.

Both teams pushed across a run in the fifth inning for a 2-2 contest. Luis Ysla relieved Grimes to begin the fifth and relinquished a leadoff double to Ali Castillo. Ysla then struck out the next two batters before allowing an RBI single to Miguel Gomez. The Gomez single to left field occurred on a 0-2 pitch for a brief, 2-1 lead.

The Baysox tied the game in the bottom of the fifth by loading the bases for Mark Trumbo. Johnson induced a double play ball from Trumbo that scored Adrian Marin from third to tie the game.

Ysla moved through the Richmond lineup, tossing 3.2 innings to earn the win. The lefty allowed one run on three hits. Ysla (3-0) walked two and struck out three. Bowie grabbed the lead in the sixth, cashing in a leadoff triple from Austin Hays. Hays scored on a wild pitch for the 3-2 Advantage.

Johnson (2-2) suffered the loss but pitched into the seventh for Richmond. The righty walked the first batter in the seventh and was removed in favor of Mike Connolly. Bowie walked a pair and allowed a sacrifice fly to close out the line on Johnson.

Luis Gonzalez earned his third save of the year for Bowie by striking out three of the four batters he faced.
