Bowie flattens Squirrels in series opener

Bowie Baysox lefty Jayson Aquino cruised through eight innings to send the Flying Squirrels (17-34) spinning into a 10-0 defeat on Tuesday night at The Diamond. Aquino hurled a season-high eight innings and allowed just four hits to shut down the Squirrels in the series opener. Tyler Horan and Hunter Cole each had base hits for the Squirrels in the loss.

The series opener featured a faceoff between a pair of lefties with savvy control however, the Baysox jumped on Squirrels southpaw Andrew Suarez with at least one run in each of the first three innings. Henry Urrutia led off the game with a single, took second on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out base hit by Garabez Rosa. Bowie made it a 3-0 lead with a pair of unearned runs in the second.

The Squirrels threatened in the bottom of the second when Tyler Horan and Hunter Cole opened the frame with base hits, but Aquino managed to strand a pair of runners in scoring position as Eliezer Zambrano grounded out to end the frame. The Baysox grabbed a 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning, cashing in a leadoff double from Chance Sisco. Quincy Latimore eventually brought homeSisco via a fielder’s choice.

Things continued to devolve for the Squirrels as Suarez ran into more trouble and was removed with one out in the fifth inning. Rosa singled to begin the inning and Quincy Latimore followed with a double. Joey Terdoslovich grounded in a run for a 5-0 advantage and Glynn Davis worked a walk. Drew Dosch then ended the outing for Suarez with a two-run triple to right. Jake Smith entered in relief and unleashed a wild pitch to give Bowie an 8-0 lead. Suarez took the loss and allowed eight runs (six earned) on ten hits in 4.1 innings pitched.

Pitching with the commanding lead, Aquino turned in his finest effort of the year. The lefty set the side down in order in the fourth and worked around a two-out walk in the fifth. Aquino needed just 75 pitches to get through the first six innings and twirled a season-high eight frames in the win.

Jake Smith, Phil McCormick, Ray Black and Tyler Mizenko combined to pitch the last 4 2/3 innings. Black yielded the final two Bowie runs in the eighth on a pair of singles, a walk, and an error. Mizenko retired all five batters he faced.
