The Bowie Baysox (47-45) handed the Richmond Flying Squirrels (42-51) their fifth consecutive defeat, 13-0, at Prince George’s Stadium on Saturday night. The Squirrels were shut out for the second consecutive ballgame on one hit as right-hander Tyler Wilson was sensational over seven innings. The cumulative score in the five-game series now stands at 31-3 in favor of Bowie.
Wilson (4-1) allowed the only hit for the Squirrels in the second inning. He did not allow another base runner, retiring the last 17 batters that he faced. In all he set aside 21-of-22 Richmond batters and faced just one over the minimum in seven innings. He walked none and struck out seven to earn his fourth win of the year – his second over the Squirrels.
Richmond left-hander Edwin Escobar made his highly-anticipated Double-A debut, and the Baysox made life difficult for him immediately. Trayvon Robinson and Niuman Romero recorded back-to-back singles to start the first inning. With runners on the corners and nobody out, Caleb Joseph sent an RBI groundout to the right-side of the Richmond infield. Ronny Paulino followed and made it 2-0 with a single back through the middle.
Josh Horton led off the second inning with a soft-single to left field. Escobar got the first out of the inning, but Chris Pettit cracked a double into the left-field corner to stretch the Bowie lead to 3-0. Through two innings, Escobar had surrendered three earned runs on five hits.
A rain delay of over an hour forced Escobar from the ballgame after four innings. However, he left with a 3-2 count on Chris Pettit. Upon the restart of the ballgame, lefty Tom Vessella took over and delivered ball four to Pettit. The walk was charged to Escobar. Eventually that walk turned into a run on an RBI single from Joseph.
Escobar (0-1) was officially charged with four earned runs on six hits over four innings. He walked one and struck out five in his first outing as a member of the Squirrels.
Vessella conceded an unearned run in the sixth inning as the Baysox went ahead, 5-0. The inning included two errors charged to the Squirrels, including a throwing error on Vessella that allowed the run to score.
Joseph supplied the exclamation point for the Baysox in the seventh inning. He clubbed a two-run home run to left field off of right-hander Drew Bowlin for a 7-0 lead.
Things got out of hand in the bottom of the eighth inning as right-hander Scott Shuman entered. He recorded the first two outs but then conceded a single and three walks to bring home a run. The Squirrels were forced to turn to position player Skyler Stromsmoe. Stromsmoe issued a bases loaded walk to Joseph to force home another run, giving Joseph five RBIs for the ballgame. Three more runs came in on three consecutive singles and a final run scored on a wild pitch to cap the scoring. Shuman was charged with four earned runs and Stromsmoe two.
The finale of the five-game series is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. at Prince George’s Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Richmond LHP Jack Snodgrass (7-3, 3.50) will make the start against Bowie LHP Jake Pettit (4-3, 5.09).
