Bowie blasts Richmond, 11-0

Chris Graham

richmond-squirrelsThe Bowie Baysox mauled the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 11-0, in the finale of a three-game series on Sunday night at Prince George’s Stadium.  With the win, the Baysox took the series from the Squirrels.  Richmond will return home trailing the Western Division wild-card by two games.

The Baysox got off to a quick start against Richmond lefty Chris Gloor.  Kyle Hudson opened the night for Bowie with a double into the left-field corner.  After recording the first two outs, Gloor issued a walk to Caleb Joseph.  Saturday night’s hero Buck Britton then stepped in.  After a lengthy battle, he launched a 3-2 fastball over the right-field wall.  The three-run shot gave the Baysox an early 3-0 lead.

Gloor was able to hold off the Baysox across the second and third innings.  However, Brandon Waring triggered the Bowie offense again in the fourth.  Waring led off with a double into the left-field corner.  He was bunted to third base and scored on a sacrifice fly from Josh Horton.  After four innings, the Baysox enjoyed a 4-0 advantage.

Bowie knocked out both Gloor and the Squirrels with three more runs in the sixth inning.  Caleb Joseph sparked the inning with a lead-off double.  An out later, Gloor walked Waring.  Niuman Romero then delivered an RBI single.  Horton made it back-to-back singles before Brian Ward lifted a sacrifice fly.  Hudson capped the inning when he flared a soft-single to left field.  Hudson’s third hit off Gloor chased the Richmond starter as Bowie led 7-0.

Gloor (9-6) was saddled with the loss over 5 2/3 innings.  In one of his toughest outings of the season, he conceded seven earned runs on nine hits.  He walked two and struck out five.  The seven earned runs were a season-high for Gloor.

Meanwhile, Baysox right-hander Mike Wright (11-2) was cruising.  He worked seven scoreless innings, allowing just five hits.  He walked one and struck out nine, earning his second win of the year over Richmond and 11th overall.

Bowie rubbed some salt in the wounds for the Squirrels with four additional runs in the eighth inning.  They were charged to left-hander Ryan Bradley, who conceded five hits and walked a man in the inning.  Utility-man Skyler Stromsmoe was forced to come on and finish the inning, recording the final two outs.

The Squirrels return home to open a three-game series with the Harrisburg Senators (Washington Nationals) at The Diamondon Monday night.  The opener of the series is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.  Richmond RHP Craig Westcott (5-11, 4.08) will make the start against Harrisburg LHP Robbie Ray (4-2, 3.89).  The Flying Squirrels Pregame Warmup will begin on Sports Radio 910, www.sportsradio910.com and IHeart Radio at 6:35 p.m.
