Bowie blanks Richmond to avoid sweep

richmond-squirrelsThe Bowie Baysox (18-12) shut out the Richmond Flying Squirrels (9-18), 2-0, in front of 4,398 at The Diamond on Sunday afternoon.  The loss snapped the Squirrels’ six-game win-streak as they failed in their attempt to match the franchise-record.  The win allowed the Baysox to salvage a win in the series, which the Squirrels took despite the defeat.

Right-hander Dylan Bundy, working back from Tommy John surgery, was limited to three innings due to a pitch count.  He did not permit a run on two hits, walked two, struck out three and did not factor in the decision.

Righty Chris Stratton kept Bowie at bay for the first four innings.  However, Jason Esposito blasted the Baysox in front in the fifth.  He led off the inning and cracked a solo-home run to left field.  Esposito’s second of the season put Bowie in front, 1-0.

The Baysox added to their lead in the sixth.  Kelby Tomlinson opened the door for Bowie, committing a throwing-error on an inning-opening ground ball from Mike Yastrzemski.  Stratton recorded the first two outs of the inning, but issued a two-out walk to Sean Halton.  Chris O’Brien followed and lined a double up the right-field line.  Yastrzemski scored for a  2-0 lead.

Stratton (0-4) retired for the day following the O’Brien double and was saddled with another hard-luck loss.  He was charged with two runs, one earned, over 5 2/3 innings.  He conceded just three hits, walked three and struck out five.

Right-hander Terry Doyle (2-0) was exceptional in relief of Bundy.  He earned the win, working four scoreless innings.  He allowed just two hits, walked none and struck out three.

Right-hander Mychal Givens finished the shutout with two scoreless innings.  He earned his fifth save in the process.

The Squirrels welcome in the Binghamton Mets (New York Mets) for a three-game series beginning at The Diamond on Monday night.  First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. as Richmond LHP Jack Snodgrass (2-3, 5.04) will make the start against BNG RHP Seth Lugo (2-0, 1.47).  The Flying Squirrels Pregame Warmup will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Fox Sports 910 and FoxSportsRichmond.com.
