richmond-squirrelsThe Bowie Baysox (2-2) edged the Richmond Flying Squirrels (2-2), 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at The Diamond.  The win allowed the Baysox to salvage a split of the season-opening four-game series.  After averaging four hours and 13 minutes per game through the first three games of the series, the finale was completed in a brisk 2:29.  All four games in the series were decided by one run.

The Baysox got off to a quick start against Richmond lefty Matt Lujan in the top of the first inning.  Glynn Davis led off and poked a double just fair up the first-base line.  Mike Yastrzemski followed and jumped on a first-pitch fastball.  He lined it for a single into right-center field, plating Davis for a 1-0 lead.

Bowie tacked on a run in the fourth, when Sean Halton opened the inning with a single.  An out later, Derrick Gibson punched an RBI double into the right-field corner to plate Halton and give the Baysox a 2-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Bowie right-hander Branden Kline (1-0) was outstanding in his first start of the year.  He blanked the Squirrels on just three hits over five innings.  He walked two and struck out 10, earning his first victory of the season.

Right-hander Andrew Triggs worked two scoreless innings behind Kline to carry the Bowie advantage into the eighth inning.  Richmond finally cracked the scoreboard in the eighth against submarine-style righty Ben Rowen.  Daniel Carbonell led off with a double into the left-field corner.  Two outs later, Mac Williamson knocked him in with his third hit of the day – a single into left field.

Richmond lefty Kelvin Marte was perfect in his first appearance of the season.  He piggybacked the start of Lujan and turned in a flawless 3 1/3 innings, retiring all 10 batters he faced.

Right-hander Mychel Givens earned his second save in as many nights, striking out the side in order in the ninth.

Lujan (0-1), making his Double-A debut, was solid.  He turned in 5 2/3 innings, retiring in favor of lefty Kelvin Marte in the sixth inning.  He was charged with two earned runs on five hits.  He walked three, struck out two and was saddled with his first loss of the season.

The Squirrels welcome the Altoona Curve (Pittsburgh Pirates) to The Diamond for a three-game series beginning on Monday night.  First pitch of the opener is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. as RHP Joe Biagini (0-0, —) makes the start for Richmond against LHP Zack Dodson (0-0, 0.00) for the Curve.  The Flying Squirrels Pregame Warmup begins at 6:05 p.m.on Fox Sports 910 and FoxSportsRichmond.com.
