Bowie Baysox first baseman Trey Mancini drove home four runs to lead the Baysox in an 11-3 rout over the Squirrels on Monday night at Prince George’s Stadium. Bowie (65-49) pounded out 16 hits and made sharp, hard contact with regularity throughout the night to win the series opener. Richmond (58-56) will attempt to pull even in the series on Tuesday with lefty Matt Gage on the mound.
The Baysox were locked in from the start and scored three runs over the first three innings against starting pitcher Kelvin Marte. Glynn Davis led off the first inning with a single and scored on a double play for a 1-0 Bowie lead. Brandon Snyder made it a 3-0 contest in the third with a two-run double down the left field line. The Squirrels turned four double plays in the loss.
Ricky Oropesa put the Squirrels on the board with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning. Rando Moreno walked to open the frame and moved to third on a base hit to left off the bat of Austin Slater. Oropesa knocked in Moreno with a fly to left field for a 3-1 deficit. Bowie designated hitter David Freitas countered with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth for a 4-1 Baysox lead.
Marte continued to struggle in the sixth inning as the Baysox opened up a 6-1 lead. Derrick Gibson reached on a solid base hit to left and then Trey Mancini whacked a two-run homer to left center field. The Baysox first baseman added a bases loaded single in the eighth inning off reliever Kyle Crick and finished with four runs driven in.
The Baysox offense backed sturdy outing from Ariel Miranda as he earned the win in his 10th MILB start. The Cuban-born lefty allowed just one run on three hits over six innings of work .He threw 86 pitches in the outing. Pat McCoy and Andrew Robinson finished out the win, pitching the final three innings.
Marte was tabbed with the loss in his roughest outing of the year. The lefty allowed a season-high six runs on 11 hits in the defeat. Edwin Quirarte relieved Marte to begin the sixth and was ambushed for three runs on three doubles to give Bowie a 9-1 advantage. Crick allowed a pair of runs in the eighth and was removed with the bases loaded for Phil McCormick. McCormick picked up a double play to end the inning.
The Squirrels continue their seven game road trip on Tuesday with game two of a four game in Bowie, MD. LHP Matt Gage (2-1, 1.96)) will start for the Squirrels against Bowie LHP Chris Lee (1-0, 5.06).
