Violent crime is down nationwide, which Republicans don’t seem to like, because they want it to be up, so that they can use crime as a campaign issue.
Republicans are weird.
More bad news for Republicans: violent crime is down in Virginia.
The bearers of this bad news: Republicans.
“Ceasefire Virginia’s targeted actions to dismantle networks of violent crime is working,” said Attorney General Jason Miyares, who is, yes, a Republican.
Another Republican, Gov. Glenn Youngkin, joined Miyares, a top candidate for next year’s Republican nomination for governor, earlier this week in touting the successes of their Ceasefire Virginia and Operation Bold Blue Line programs, which they’re crediting for reducing violent crime in Virginia 11 percent over the past year.
“In coordination with the Attorney General’s Ceasefire Virginia Initiative, we launched Operation Bold Blue Line two years ago to reduce violent crime and enhance law enforcement partnerships across Virginia. Virginia State Police, local law enforcement and our federal partners are improving safety in our communities, interdicting illegal drug and gang activity, reinforcing community engagement and enforcing tougher penalties for violent criminals,” Youngkin said.
The trend in Virginia mirrors what is being seen nationwide, with the FBI reporting that violent crime is significantly down since former president Donald Trump was in office, despite claims to the contrary.
Trump has consistently stoked fear among Americans insinuating crime is “through the roof” and reinforcing the falsehood in debates and on the campaign trail.
It’s just weird wishful thinking on his part.
