Augusta Health offers free skin-cancer screening

Contributors

Augusta Health Cancer Center will conduct its annual free Skin Cancer Screening on Tuesday, June 26 beginning at 5:30 pm.  The screening will be held on the first floor of the Cancer Center. Please call 540.332.5961 or 540.932.5961 for an appointment.  The screenings will be conducted by local dermatologists.

Skin-cancer screening is very important.  Over the past few years, the incidence of melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer, has been increasing.  Although anyone can develop skin cancer, some people are at higher risk.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the risk factors for skin cancer are:

– A lighter natural skin color
– A personal history of skin cancer
– A family history of melanoma
– Exposure to the sun through work and play
– A history of sunburns in early life
– Skin that burns, freckles, reddens easily, or becomes painful in the sun
– Blue or green eyes.
