Augusta County: VDOT finally doing something about traffic in the Wilson school complex

It’s way past time, but VDOT is finally doing something about the odd and unsafe traffic flow in the Wilson school complex in Augusta County.

I graduated from Wilson Memorial High School in 1990; the photo that VDOT sent us to run with a story about this road project could have been taken back then.

It’s been this unsafe for that long.

The $3.8 million project to add a second inbound lane to Wilson Avenue, new turn lanes at the intersection with Route 250 and a roundabout at the intersection of Wilson Avenue, Hornet Road and Vo Tech Road is going to get under way the week of Aug. 24, per a release from VDOT.

This is going to be a nightmare to deal with throughout the 2026-2027 school year, with VDOT contractors focusing during the school year on the Wilson Avenue widening and intersection improvements at Route 250.

There will be 24/7 shoulder closures along Wilson Avenue as that work is ongoing. Flagger traffic control will be limited to weekdays between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Upon completion of the school year in May, contractors will construct the roundabout at the Wilson/Hornet/Vo Tech intersection.

The goal is to have the roundabout be paved and open to traffic in time for the 2027-2028 school year.
