The Atlantic Coast Conference concluded its annual fall meetings on Wednesday with the league and its member institutions reaffirming a commitment to student-athletes, particularly in discussing the impact of health, safety and time demands.
“The last two days of meetings have been highly productive with thorough discussions on upcoming autonomy and NCAA legislation, specifically surrounding student-athlete welfare and their collegiate experience,” said ACC Commissioner John Swofford.
Faculty athletic representatives, athletic directors and senior woman administrators from each of the conference’s 15 member schools joined ACC senior staff members in a two-day agenda that included national sport committee reports, autonomy discussions and updates on the state of ACC football, men’s and women’s basketball, and Olympic sports.
Two student-athletes – Florida State beach volleyball player Katherine Plessy and Clemson baseball player Patrick Andrews – participated in a number of this week’s meetings. Plessy is the chair of the ACC’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and Andrews is one of the ACC’s student-athlete representatives for the autonomy process.
“It was an honor and privilege to play such an important role in the future direction of the ACC,” said Plessy. “It was truly an incredible experience and to see what goes on behind the scenes. I’m thankful for all the hard work that’s put in to make the ACC so successful.”
“Being given the opportunity to represent the league’s student-athletes is a tremendous honor,” said Andrews. “Everybody involved in this process seems very committed to student-athlete involvement, both now and in the future.”
Florida State University served as the host institution for the 2015 ACC fall meetings. The site of the annual fall meeting rotates among the league’s campuses and is based on the respective institution of the current President of the Conference.
