April is National Donate Life Month

Contributors

During National Donate Life Month in April, RMH celebrates the generosity of those who have saved lives by becoming organ, tissue, marrow and blood donors and encourages others to follow their lead.

One donor can save as many as nine lives through organ donation, enhance more than 50 lives through tissue donation and restore sight to two people through eye donation, according to Donate Life America.

RMH partners in the donation process with LifeNet Health, the federally-designated organ procurement organization for most of Virginia. LifeNet coordinates the recovery and placement of organs in Virginia, teaches the public about donation and handles a bereavement program for donor families.

In 2011, RMH had 10 tissue donors and one organ donor, according to LifeNet.

“Tissue and eye donation is often a more viable option for members of our community,” said Brenda Hedrick, RN, nurse coordinator. “Our one organ donor last year, saved two lives and made a difference in multiple lives with her gift.”

According to Donate Life America, about three Virginians die each week waiting for an organ transplant.
