Chris Graham

waynesboroThe Waynesboro Police Department and the Waynesboro Fire Department responded to Kate Collins Middle School on Monday for a report of a bomb threat that was communicated to the school.

At approximately 2 p.m., students and staff were evacuated from the building while officers and detectives with the Police Department conducted their investigation.  Four Virginia State Police bomb sniffing K-9 teams responded and did a search of the school finding no explosive devices.  The search concluded at 4:45 p.m.   Students were released at the regular dismissal time but at a location that was safe distance from the school building.

After a thorough investigation, which including reviewing surveillance footage from the school’s security system and interviewing witnesses, the Police Department identified a male Kate Collins Middle School student as the source of the bomb threat hoax.   Detectives went to his home to interview him.  As they were speaking to him, he became violent and assaulted one of them.  Detectives immediately took the juvenile into custody.
