Analysis: Will we see Goldust vs. Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 30?

goldustIt seemed from the get-go that the teaming of half-brothers Goldust and Cody Rhodes was destined to end with them feuding and coming to a payoff match at WrestleMania 30.

Then Goldust started tweeting about how The Brotherhood wasn’t going to break up, and that no matter what rumors you might be hearing, there was not going to be a brother vs. brother match at ‘Mania.

Cody got in on the act this weekend, tweeting a note that seemed to contradict what Goldie had said earlier.

“Don’t let anybody tell you what is or isn’t gonna happen @WrestleMania / bottom line it aims to be the best of the best.”

Hmmm … is this about something else entirely, like the CM Punk situation, or Daniel Bryan’s main-event status at ‘Mania? Or is this an effort by Cody to distance himself from his big brother, maybe add fuel to whatever fire is about to be started, basically an early, early part of the storyline that is developing?

I’ll go with what I’ve thought all along since Goldust returned to action in WWE several months ago: that it was all about getting Goldust vs. Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 30. The tag-team titles were a logical part of the walkup to a feud. Splitting tag partners into feuding combatants is one of the oldest stories in the wrestling book. Pitting brothers into a feud against each other is right up there with that. It’s easy to imagine WWE bringing Dusty Rhodes into the storyline, backing one or the other in the weeks leading up to ‘Mania, then turning on the brother that he had been backing to give us a swerve finish, maybe then even extending the rivalry past WM30 into the spring.

Basically, there’s more money there than there is putting The Brotherhood in a tag match at WrestleMania or just ignoring them completely the next few weeks.

And if there’s anybody who knows how to make money off a storyline, it’s Vince McMahon.
