Traffic lanes on southbound U.S. 29 (Seminole Trail) in Albemarle County will shift a foot and a half away from the median to allow contract crews room to work on a pedestrian bridge that will cross U.S. 29.

The shift, set to go into place on Tuesday, will begin on Seminole Trail southbound, approximately 300 feet south of Seminole Court. Drivers will encounter a second shift, which will realign motorists to their original travel lanes, approximately 350 feet after the first shift (near Bond Street).

Before approaching this area, drivers should move into their preferred travel lane and stay in this lane through the work zone.

VDOT urges motorists to always be attentive and drive slowly in work zones where workers are present.

The pedestrian bridge is one element of several projects designed to improve safety and relieve congestion along the Albemarle County and Charlottesville portion of the U.S. 29 corridor.

The bridge is under construction just north of the U.S. 29/Zan Road intersection and will include new shared-use paths at entry points on the east and west sides of Seminole Trail. When complete, the structure will feature access ramps to the bridge and bus-only pull-offs for future bus service on both sides.

Aside from the pedestrian bridge, this project package includes:

  • the recently reconfigured intersection of U.S. 29 and Route 743 (Hydraulic Road).
  • the recently completed roundabout at Hydraulic Road and Hillsdale Drive.
  • the access management improvements on westbound Hydraulic Road at Brandywine Drive and Michie Drive.

These transportation improvements are funded for a combined $24 million through the SMART SCALE process. For more information about the project elements, visit Hydraulic Road and U.S. 29 transportation improvements.
