A GoFundMe page has been launched to assist the family of Ned Gallaway, the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors member whose Loring Drive home was destroyed in a fire on Monday.
“While Ned, Kaitlyn, Maggie and AJ are thankfully unharmed, the profound loss they’ve experienced is unimaginable. Their two beloved dogs did not survive and their four cherished cats are still unaccounted for. They are left with absolutely nothing but the clothes on their backs,” wrote Alyson O’Sullivan, the organizer of the fundraising campaign which at this writing has collected more than $40,000 toward a $50,000 campaign goal.
The Gallaway family was not home at the time of 4:50 p.m. Monday fire, which spread to two nearby homes in the 2100 block of Loring Drive.
The Albemarle County Fire Marshal’s Office has determined that the fire was accidental in nature.
The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
“While this has been a deeply personal loss for my family, I want to publicly thank Albemarle County Fire Rescue, including both career and volunteer members, as well as the Albemarle County Police Department and other first responders who acted quickly to contain the fire,” said Gallaway, a Democrat who is the former chair of the Albemarle County School Board, and who has served on the Board of Supervisors since 2018.
“I’ve always been proud to serve this community, and in the wake of this loss, I’ve seen firsthand just how compassionate it is. My family and I are deeply grateful for every person who has reached out in support. We kindly ask for privacy as we continue to process and recover,” Gallaway said.
