A dispute between neighbors got out of hand when a Batesville man discharged a firearm and rammed an ATV into a parked vehicle, according to the Albemarle County Police Department.

On Wednesday, Aug. 28, officers responded to the 2600 block of Heartwood Road in Batesville for a report of shots fired.

Officers determined that during the dispute, 73-year-old Craig Thomson Handley discharged a firearm. Handley also struck a parked vehicle with an ATV, according to police.

No one was injured during the incident.

Handley retreated to his home after the incident. When police arrived, he allegedly failed to cooperate with their attempts to gain his compliance.

Arrest warrants were obtained and after approximately eight hours, Handley was taken into police custody.

Handly was booked into Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail on the following charges:

  • Reckless handling of a firearm (18.2-56.1)
  • Malicious wounding, attempted (18.2-51)
  • Use of a firearm in the commission of a felony (18.2-53.1)
  • Hit and run, unattended property (46.2-897)

This incident remains under investigation.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact the Albemarle County Police Department at (434) 296-5807.
