nationals_logoAdam Jones hit solo homers off sliders in the first and ninth, but that was it for the Orioles against Nats ace Max Scherzer, in a 3-2 Washington win Sunday afternoon.

Scherzer (10-7, 2.11 ERA) went eight and two-thirds innings, giving up two runs on four hits, striking out seven without issuing a walk.

He gave up a solo homer to Jones with two outs in the first, then only allowed a baserunner once more, on a pair of sixth-inning singles by Jonathan Schoop and Jimmy Paredes, until the ninth.

Jones hit a two-out, two-strike front-door slider just over the wall in left to chase Scherzer. Nats closer Drew Storen struck out Chris Davis to close out the game and record his 27th save.

Orioles starter Wei-Yin Chin (4-5, 2.78 ERA) was solid, getting touched up only in the fourth, on a pair of two-out run-scoring hits, an RBI single by Dan Uggla and a two-run double by Tyler Moore.

Chin went eight innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on eight hits, striking out seven without issuing a walk.

Washington (48-39) has a two-game lead in the National League East heading into the All-Star break.

Baltimore (44-44) is three and a half games back of the New York Yankees in the American League East.
