The No. 6 UVA field hockey team (3-2) tallied its second shutout victory of the season, defeating Miami (Ohio), 3-0, Tuesday afternoon at Turf Field in Charlottesville, Va.
“The team was really able to play in-control today while going against a very different defense that Miami presented,” said Virginia head coach Michele Madison. “Miami played a half-court press and we were able to establish a good passing game so that we could resume our attacking style of play.”
The Cavaliers dominated ball possession in the first half, taking 11 shots while Miami (0-5) only managed two, both of which came off penalty corners. Virginia’s lone goal of the first half came off of one of UVa’s four penalty corners with senior Jess Orrett (Wells, England) smashing in a shot from the top of the circle midway through the period.
Sophomore Riley Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.) gave the Cavaliers some breathing room, tapping in a pass from Orrett ten minutes into the second half. Sophomore Lucy Hyams (Whitstable, England) converted UVa’s final penalty corner opportunity of the game to put the Cavaliers up, 3-0, with 16:19 remaining.
Senior goalkeeper Jenny Johnstone (Paisley, Scotland) played the entire game in goal, making three saves to earn her tenth career shutout. Johnstone had split the goal-keeping duties with redshirt sophomore Rebecca Holden (Fishing Creek, N.J.) in Virginia’s season-opening 9-0 shutout victory at William & Mary.
Virginia finished the game with 19 shots, eight of which were on-goal. Miami tallied five shots, three on goal.
Freshman Nadine de Koning (Laren, The Netherlands) had a pair of assists as the stopper on the two penalty corner goals. Senior Kelsey LeBlanc (Haverford, Pa.) and freshman Emilie van Zinnicq Bergman (Dordrecht, The Netherlands) also each had an assist on a penalty corner goal.
The Cavaliers close out the current home stand with a pair of games this weekend, hosting No. 15 Louisville onFriday, Sept. 12 at 6 p.m., followed by a Sunday, Sept. 14 noon game against Rutgers. Admission is free for all of Virginia’s regular-season home field hockey games.
