The No. 5 Virginia women’s lacrosse team (7-4, 1-2 ACC) earned a 16-6 road win at William & Mary (4-5, 0-0 CAA) on Wednesday (March 25), the fourth-straight win for the Cavaliers.
Senior attacker Casey Bocklet (South Salem, N.Y.) had a career-high eight points, scoring five goals with three assists, while also causing three turnovers and grabbing two ground balls. Redshirt senior Liza Blue (Butler, Md.) and junior Mary Alati (Glen Ridge, N.J.) scored three goals apiece. Senior Courtney Swan (Vero Beach, Fla.) had three assists while winning seven draw controls and causing a pair of turnovers.
William & Mary’s Shannon Quinn scored a hat trick.
Virginia held an 8-4 lead at halftime and outscored the Tribe, 8-2, in the second half. The Cavaliers won 17 draws to the Tribe’s seven and outshot W&M 32-21.
“We are excited that we came down and really took care of William & Mary from the very beginning,” said Virginia head coach Julie Myers. “They were a very physical, fast and aggressive team. I feel that we were able to hold our ground and chip away. Our fast break was great tonight and we had a lot of different people scoring. To limit some very talented players to just six goals is a testament to teamwork and really being there for each other.”
After Alati scored the game’s first goal two minutes into the contest, senior Daniela Eppler (Baltimore, Md.) won the ensuing draw control, setting up Bocklet’s first goal 12 seconds later.
The two teams traded goals with Virginia holding a 5-4 advantage with 12 minutes left in the half. Blue scored on a feed from freshman Kasey Behr (Northport, N.Y.) with 10:27 remaining in the half, the first of three-straight goals for the Cavaliers to close out the period.
Junior Kelly Boyd (Baltimore, Md.) opened the second half by scoring 1:46 into the period, but William & Mary answered a minute later, making it a 9-5 game. Swan set up Bocklet’s third goal with 25:56 remaining in the game, the start of a 6-0 run for the Cavaliers that was capped by Bocklet’s fourth goal with 18:44 remaining. After the Tribe scored to temporarily stop the running clock, Bocklet scored her fifth goal, knocking the ball out of William & Mary’s goalkeeper’s stick, picking up the ground ball and smashing it into the net, putting UVa up 16-6 with 12:36 remaining in the game.
Freshman goalie Rachel Vander Kolk (Severna Park, Md.) made nine saves, including seven in the second half.
Myers was able to utilize her bench with 24 Cavaliers playing in the game.
Virginia returns to conference play with a Saturday, March 28 game at 1 p.m. at No. 2 Boston College, before returning home on Wednesday, April 1 to host Navy at 6 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium, the first of four-straight home contests to close out the regular season.
Single-game reserved seats are available for all women’s home games for $7. Single-game general admission adult tickets for women’s home games are $5, while youth (18 and under), seniors (60 and over), and UVa faculty and staff tickets are $4 each.
