The No. 4 Virginia women’s lacrosse team (9-5, 2-3 ACC) had its six-game win streak snapped with a 14-4 loss to No. 17 Notre Dame (7-5, 2-3 ACC) on Saturday (April 4) at Klöckner Stadium.
Notre Dame held a 5-0 lead at halftime and extended its advantage to 11-0 with 18:31 remaining. Senior Daniela Eppler (Baltimore, Md.) scored Virginia’s first goal of the game with 17:57 remaining.
“Sports are humbling,” said Virginia head coach Julie Myers. “Notre Dame played a really good game. They came in with their backs against the wall and they fought for everything. They kind of caught us by surprise. We didn’t play particularly well anywhere. Loose balls were an issue for us, draw controls as well as ground balls. When we were down on attack, their defense did a good job of getting on our hands and the goalie made some really good saves.”
The Fighting Irish outshot the Cavaliers, 32-22 and held a 13-7 edge in draw controls, including winning 10 in the second half.
Eppler scored two of Virginia’s four goals with seniors Liza Blue (Butler, Md.) and Casey Bocklet (South Salem, N.Y.) contributing the other two. Freshman goalie Rachel Vander Kolk (Severna Park, Md.) made seven saves.
Notre Dame’s Courtney Fortunato scored six goals with two assists.
Next week, Virginia takes on No. 10 Louisville on Sunday, April 12 at 1 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium and then closes out the regular-season on Friday, April 17 when it hosts Virginia Tech at 6 p.m.
Single-game reserved seats are available for all women’s home games for $7. Single-game general admission adult tickets for women’s home games are $5, while youth (18 and under), seniors (60 and over), and UVa faculty and staff tickets are $4 each.
The Cavaliers will also be hosting the ACC Tournament at Klöckner Stadium April 23-26. Ticket information for the ACC Tournament will be released soon.
