The city of Charlotte welcomes the New York Life ACC Tournament for the 13th time and for the first time since 2008 as the 66th annual event gets underway Tuesday at Spectrum Center.
Defending champion and 2019 regular-season co-champion Virginia will be the top-seeded team for the fourth time in six years and the fifth time overall. The Cavaliers will receive a double-bye into Thursday’s quarterfinal round, along with No. 2 seed and regular-season co-champion North Carolina, No. 3 Duke and No. 4 Florida State.
The tournament opens Tuesday with three first-round games. No. 12 Miami faces No. 13 Wake Forest at noon, followed by No. 10 Georgia Tech versus No. 15 Notre Dame at 2 p.m. No. 11 Boston College faces No. 14 Pitt at 7 p.m.
Fifth-seeded Virginia Tech, No. 6 Syracuse, No. 7 Louisville, No. 8 NC State and No. 9 Clemson will see their first tournament action on Wednesday. NC State and Clemson will square off at noon, while Virginia Tech, Syracuse and Louisville will meet the winners of Tuesday’s three first-round games.
Following Thursday’s full day of quarterfinals, the tournament will culminate with Friday night’s semifinals and Saturday night’s championship game in prime time for the fifth consecutive year.
Charlotte’s 13 years as an ACC Tournament city will tie Raleigh, N.C. (Reynolds Coliseum) for second-most times hosting the event (behind Greensboro’s 26).
The ACC Tournament was played three years at the first Charlotte Coliseum, followed by eight years at the second Coliseum and now for a second time at Spectrum Center.

ACC Notes
No. 1 ACC Tournament seed Virginia owns 28 or more wins for the fifth time in the last six seasons … UVA also has 16 or more league wins for the fourth time in school history.
For only the second time in ACC history, multiple teams will enter the conference tournament having won their final seven or more regular-season league games … Virginia has an eight-game streak and North Carolina is at seven … the only other year in which this happened was 1974, when NC State was 12-0 and Maryland won its final seven games of regular-season ACC play.
Duke’s Zion Williamson is only the third player to earn ACC Player of the Year and ACC Rookie of the Year honors in the same year, but the third Blue Devil to do so in the last five seasons … Williamson joins Jahlil Okafor (2015) and Marvin Bagley III (last season).
In ACC history, 163 teams have started 1-4 or 0-5 in conference play … Florida State, at 13-5 after a 1-4 start, became only the fourth of those to finish with a winning conference record … the Seminoles’ strong finish secured a No. 4 ACC tourney seed and a double bye.
Fifth-seeded Virginia Tech’s 12 regular-season ACC wins are the most in a season for the Hokies since joining the league prior to the 2004-05 season … Virginia Tech had won 10 games in an ACC season five times previously, including each of the last three years.
Miami is the No. 12 seed for the third time (2007, 2010) … in 2010, UM upset the No. 5 seed (Wake Forest) and No. 4 seed (Virginia Tech) en route to a semifinal appearance … Miami is 8-6 in the tournament under head coach Jim Larrañaga.
North Carolina captured the most recent ACC Tournament held in Charlotte prior to this season, defeating Clemson in the 2008 title game for its fifth conference crown in the Queen City … Duke (four times) and Georgia Tech (twice) have also won multiple ACC Tournaments in Charlotte, and NC State claimed the 1970 title.
