15 roads closed by flooding in Culpeper District

Chris Graham

road work transportationHeavy rains that swept across Piedmont Virginia overnight has left roads closed due to high water in several counties. Five secondary roads, including Route 649 (Proffit Road), are reported closed in Albemarle County. Five roads in Orange County, four in Orange County and one road in Culpeper County are also closed this morning.

As the high water recedes this morning those roads are likely to reopen. Current road conditions, including road closures by county, are posted on the 511Virginia website under the Road Conditions Table tab. Virginia Department of Transportation crews will inspect roads that were closed by flooding before reopening them to traffic.

More rain is in the forecast for the next several days, which may result in more flooding and road closures. VDOT and other emergency response agencies remind drivers never to drive through water flowing across a roadway. Six inches of moving water is enough to knock a person off their feet; 12 inches will sweep a car off the roadway. Remember: Turn Around, Don’t Drown.

Drivers should check www.511virginia.org or the 511 mobile app for updated information about the road closures and follow @VaDOTCULP on Twitter for updates.
