virginia basketballMiami almost literally couldn’t miss from three-point range in the second half, keying the ‘Canes to a 64-61 win over #3 Virginia Monday night.

UM (22-5, 11-4 ACC) made five of its first six from long-range in the second half to open up as much as an eight-point lead late.

UVA (21-6, 10-5 ACC) hung close because Malcolm Brogdon made his first eight shots in the second half.

A quick five-point flurry by Brogon, who finished with a game-high 28, cut the eight-point lead to three, at 60-57, on a three-pointer with 2:02 left.

A London Perrantes drive and layup with 1:22 left got Virginia within one, and the ‘Hoos had a chance to take the lead on their next possession, but Mike Tobey missed a layup with 37 seconds left and fouled out after Tonye Jekiri snared the rebound.

UVA had one more chance to take the lead. Down 61-59 inside of 30 seconds, Brogdon attempted a contested three that hit the front rim with 23 seconds left.

Ja’Quan Newton left the door open by missing the second of his two free throws. Perrantes scored on a drive to the basket with 4.7 seconds left to cut the lead to one at 62-61.

Davon Reed, who led Miami with 21 points, made two free throws with 3.9 seconds left to push the lead back to three. Perrantes missed a 40-foot heave at the buzzer to end it.
