#10 Virginia defeats Wagner, 6-2

The No. 10 Virginia baseball team knocked off Wagner, 6-2, Tuesday afternoon at Davenport Field. UVA starting pitcher Adam Haseley (So., Windermere, Fla.) worked a career-long 7 1/3 innings as the Cavaliers (8-4) opened the two-game midweek series with a victory.

“I thought Adam Haseley was really efficient,” Virginia head coach Brian O’Connor said. “He had really good command in the game. He had one inning that was long but he buckled down after that and made big pitches and was efficient. It was great to see him pitch into the eighth for us; he’s pitching some good baseball for us.”

Haseley (3-0) gave up a run, four hits and one walk while striking out five. He retired the final 12 batters that he faced. Jack Roberts (R-So., Richmond, Va.) worked the final 1 2/3 innings to seal the win. Wagner starter Mike Adams (0-2) pitched 4 2/3 innings, giving up six earned runs, eight hits and two walks while striking out one.

Ryan Karstetter (Fr., Port Matilda, Pa.) and Justin Novak (So., Tokyo, Japan) each had a pair of hits as Virginia finished nine hits. Doak Dozier (Fr., Fort Worth, Texas) homered for UVA. Anthony Harrold and Phil Capra each had two hits for Wagner (3-3).

Virginia struck first for three runs in the second inning. Daniel Pinero (Jr., Toronto, Ontario) led off with a single and moved to second on a Dozier sacrifice. Karstetter followed with a run-scoring single to center. With two outs and two runners in scoring position, Ernie Clement (So., Rochester, N.Y.) lined a single to left-center to give UVA a 3-0 lead.

Wagner chipped a run from the lead in the third inning. Capra led off with a single, moved to second on a one-out groundout and scored on a single by Nick Mascelli. The Seahawks then loaded the bases before Haseley induced a flyout to right from Anthony Godino.

Virginia scored in the fourth inning. Karstetter led off with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice and scored on a Novak infield single.

UVA added a pair of runs in the fifth. Matt Thaiss (Jr., Jackson, N.J.) led off with a ground-rule double, moved to third on a groundout and scored when he beat the throw home following a Pinero grounder to shortstop. Dozier hit a solo home run into the right-field bleachers later in the inning, marking his first college homer.

The teams complete their two-game series at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Davenport Field.
