The #10/9 (IWLCA/Inside Lacrosse) James Madison women’s lacrosse team scored three of the game’s final four goals and edged #20 (Inside Lacrosse) Virginia Tech 11-9 Wednesday afternoon.
The Dukes improved to 2-0 while Virginia Tech, which lost for the first time this season, has a 4-1 record.
Redshirt sophomore Casey Ancarrow (Jarrettsville, Md./John Carroll) scored two of the Dukes’ final three goals. Her first, with 13:43 remaining, broke an 8-8 tie and put JMU ahead 9-8. Then junior Ashley Kimener (Oakton, Va./Oakton) converted a free-position shot with 11:42 to go for a 10-8 advantage.
Tech’s Allie Emala scored an unassisted goal at the 10:51 mark to close the gap to 10-9. But JMU’s senior Meghan Wienecke (Baltimore, Md./Towson) got the ensuing draw control, and the Dukes worked the ball until Ancarrow scored goal number 12 with 6:54 remaining.
The Hokies had five scoring chances in the final 5:01. Two shots were saved by redshirt junior goalkeeper Alex Menghetti (Media, Pa./Penncrest), and three were wide of the goal. Two of the wide shots were free-position attempts.
Junior Ariel Lane (Vero Beach , Fla./Vero Beach) was the Dukes’ top scorer with four goals. Ancarrow, Kimener and senior Mary Kate Lomady (Abington, Pa./Abington) each netted two goals. Junior Monica Zabel (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) led JMU with four assists.
Tech got two goals each from Emala, Caitlyn Wier and Brooke Martin.
Other statistical leaders for the Dukes included junior Caitlin McHugh (Westminster, Md./Mercy) with three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Kimener and Menghetti also each had three ground balls. Wienecke had a team-high two draw controls and also had two caused turnovers.
Menghetti finished with nine saves, and Tech goalie Alex Gale had 10 saves.
