JMU’s Thorpe granted sixth year of eligibility

James Madison quarterback Justin Thorpe (Richmond, Va./Varina) has been granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA, announced today. He will now be listed as a redshirt junior for JMU for the remainder of the season.

Thorpe had a season-ending injury as a true freshman in 2008 and then was injured also in the first half of the 2010 season opener against Morehead State, which ended that season. In cases where there have been two season ending injuries early in the year, application can be made for a sixth year, though it is not always granted.

In his career, he is 14-6 as a starting quarterback, 14-4 against FCS opponents and has led JMU to wins in his last 12 FCS regular season starts.

This season, Thorpe has started all four games at quarterback for the Dukes, rushing for a team-high 261 yards and three touchdowns on 47 carries, while going 61-for-98 through the air for 728 yards and five scores. Most recently, he posted career highs of 26 completions, 40 attempts and 340 passing yards along with two touchdowns and two interceptions in the Madison win at Rhode Island, Sept. 22.

Last year, the Richmond native started eight games at quarterback, going 6-2 as the starter. He was 72-for-122 for 858 yards and five touchdowns through the air while carrying the ball 107 times for 385 yards and one score.
