The Virginia Lottery Board has signed off on a planned casino in Petersburg, the fifth approved location for an operator in Virginia.

Live! Casino Virginia will open its temporary facility on Jan. 22 now that all regulatory obligations have been met. The temporary location offers 75,000 square feet of gaming space.

The application was unanimously approved for PPE Casino Resorts Petersburg LLC.

The gaming facility will be located near the intersection of Interstate 95 and Wagner Road at exit 48B.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held last March for the permanent casino which will feature more than 450,000 square feet of gaming, hotel and dining space including a convention center and concert venue. The venture is projected to offer 1,400 permanent jobs and rake in more than $200 million annually in economic benefits.

The planned casino in Petersburg will join four other approved casinos in Bristol, Danville, Norfolk and Portsmouth. Richmond unsuccessfully made a bid for a casino, but residents voted against the referendum twice.

The $1.4 billion project is a joint venture between The Cordish Companies and Bruce Smith Enterprise.

Under legislation passed by the General Assembly in 2020, the Virginia Lottery licenses and regulates casinos and sports betting in the Commonwealth.
