The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services announced the state’s crop production forecast based on conditions as of September 1. This information comes from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).
Corn production in Virginia is forecast at 53.4 million bushels, unchanged from the August forecast but up 5 percent from the previous crop. Yield was estimated at 157 bushels per acre, unchanged from last month but up 12 bushels from the 2014 level. Acres for harvest as grain were estimated at 340,000 acres, down 10,000 acres from 2014.
Soybean production for Virginia is forecast at 25.7 million bushels, down 7 percent from the August forecast but up slightly from 2014. Yield was estimated at 39 bushels per acre, down 3 bushels from last month and down 0.5 bushels from a year ago. Acreage for harvest as beans was estimated at 660,000 acres, up 10,000 acres from the previous year.
Virginia cotton production is projected to be 190,000 bales, down 10 percent from the August forecast and down 14 percent from last year. Cotton yields are forecast to average 1,086 pounds per acre, down 114 pounds from last month and down 153 pounds per acre from the previous year. Producers expect to harvest 84,000 acres, unchanged from the August forecast but down 2,000 acres from 2014.
Peanut farmers in Virginia anticipate harvesting 72.2 million pounds for 2015, down 13 percent from last year. Acres expected to be harvested total 19,000 acres, unchanged from last year. Producers expect a yield of 3,800 pounds per acre, down 550 pounds from 2014.
Virginia flue-cured tobacco production is forecast at 50.4 million pounds, down 2 percent from the August forecast and down 7 percent from 2014. Yield was projected at 2,400 pounds per acre, down 50 pounds from last month but unchanged from the 2014 crop. Harvested acreage was estimated at 21,000 acres, down 1,500 acres from last year’s crop.
