Poll: Virginia split on gay marriage, business, religious objections

AFP

economic-forecast-headerVirginia voters, by a slim margin, support gay marriage and the Supreme Court ruling legalizing gay marriage nationwide, but there is a divide on how whether businesses should be allowed to refuse service to gays and lesbians.

A 49 percent-43 percent plurality supports gay marriage, and a 49 percent-46 percent plurality supports the Supreme Court ruling on gay marriage, according to poll numbers released by Quinnipiac University this week.

A near-supermajority says businesses should not be allowed to refuse service to gays and lesbians – 61 percent to 32 percent. The divide comes on the question of how to treat business owners who cite religious objections to gays and lesbians. By a tiny margin, 47 percent to 45 percent, Virginians feel business owners citing religious objections should be allowed to deny service to gays and lesbians.
