The Waynesboro School Board announced the appointment of Tonya Cook Carter as principal of Wenonah Elementary School at a Tuesday, June 9 School Board Meeting.
Carter has a bachelor of arts in child development from Lynchburg College, a master’s degree in educational leadership from Lynchburg College, and is currently completing doctoral studies through Regent University.
Carter began her teaching career in 1998 in Pittsylvania County Schools. She has previously held administrative positions since 2005 in Greene County Public Schools and Fluvanna County Public Schools. She is currently an assistant principal for Charlottesville City Schools.
“Mrs. Carter’s instructional and administrative experiences are reflected in a leadership style that is perfectly suited for Wenonah Elementary School,” said Dr. Jeffrey Cassell, the superintendent of Waynesboro Public Schools. “Her knowledge of teaching and learning, coupled with her high expectations for student success, will support continued progress at Wenonah. In her previous roles, she has been described by colleagues as, “approachable, accessible, and a helpful resource for teachers. She is very passionate about children and their well-being. Her high energy, organizational skills, and self-motivation will contribute to her ability to have a positive impact as a leader at Wenonah Elementary School.”
Carter and her husband, James Carter Jr., currently reside in Charlottesville, and have two sons Cameron, a rising eighth-grader, and Trevon, who attends Virginia Commonwealth University.
