A throwing error on a ground ball in the top of the 10th allowed two New Market runs to score, lifting the Rebels to a 6-4 win over the Waynesboro Generals Sunday night.
Conner Gunn grounded weakly to first with the bases loaded and one down, and Generals first baseman Kevin Phillips’ throw home was off-line, allowing Zach Callahan and Storm Edwards to score.
Waynesboro had a chance to tie it in the 10th, getting Clayton Taylor on first with one out when he was hit by a pitch, but Phillips popped out to right for the second out, and pinch-hitter Brooks Wilson struck out to end the game.
Generals reliever Frankie Romano took the loss, giving up two unearned runs in an inning and a third of work.
Waynesboro got on the board first, in the first, on an RBI double by Taylor and an RBI single by Kevin Phillips.
New Market got a run back in the top of the second on a run-scoring single by Lorenzo Wright.
A Garrison Elliot RBI single in the third tied the game at 2-2. A Storm Edwards RBI triple and a Garrison Elliot RBI groundout in the fifth gave the Rebels a 4-2 lead.
Waynesboro chipped away in the bottom of the fifth, on a two-out RBI double by Joseph Estrada that cut the deficit to 4-3.
Estrada was thrown out at third trying to stretch the hit to a triple to end that threat. The Generals had one other good opportunity to tie the score before the ninth when Taylor led off the sixth with a double to the fence in right-center, but he was stranded at second.
The Generals finally tied the game in the ninth on a one-out RBI single by Michael Brosseau, and had a chance to win it with two outs and runners on second and third and two-hole hitter Jeremy Taylor at the plate.
Taylor tried a surprise drag bunt, but the ball went straight to Elliot at first base, sending the game to extras.
