Waynesboro Police arrest Staunton man on check forging

Chris Graham

Hoffman, Matthew AllynThe Waynesboro Police Department has arrested a Staunton man on numerous felony charges after he went on a check forging and cashing spree in March of this year.

Matthew Allyn Hoffman, 36 years old, was arrested by rangers with the National Park Service on 39 warrants Friday morning after he was found on the Blue Ridge Parkway.  He had been eluding capture since June.  In late March, the victim, a 75 year old Waynesboro woman, notified the police department of some suspicious activity in her checking account.  She told police that nearly $2,000 had been taken from her checking account by someone who had passed thirteen bogus checks throughout the month.  She named Hoffman as a suspect because he had been doing work in her house and would have had easy access to her checkbook.  Officers caught up with Hoffman in May and he admitted to forging and cashing the victim’s checks.

Hoffman is facing the following felony charges:

  • 13 counts of forgery
  • 13 counts of passing a forged document
  • 13 counts of obtaining money by false pretenses

Hoffman is being held at Middle River Regional Jail without bond.
