policecar3Two people are dead after a two-vehicle accident on Route 11 near College Lane in Weyers Cave.

At 7:59 a.m. Monday (April 7, 2014), Virginia State Police Trooper M.C. Brill responded to a two-vehicle crash on Lee Highway/Route 11, near College Lane.

A 2007 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck was southbound on Highway 11 when it pulled into the center turn lane. A vehicle ahead was stopped in the turn lane and, according to witnesses, the pickup truck swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid the stopped vehicle. When the Silverado swerved to the left it went into the northbound lane and collided head-on with a northbound 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier.

The driver of the Silverado, Geraldine K. Sprouse, 65, of Craigsville, Va., died at the scene. She was the vehicle’s only occupant and was not wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the Cavalier, Nicholas R. Broce, 33, of Fort Defiance, Va., died at the scene. He was the vehicle’s only occupant and was not wearing a seat belt.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Highway 11 was re-opened by 10:20 a.m.
