The Rocks Mountain Fire in the south district of Shenandoah National Park has grown to over 100 acres. Firefighters are on the ground working along the park boundary to prevent the fire from leaving the park.
The fire, which is burning entirely within the park on Rocks Mountain, was reported to park at approximately 3:10 p.m. on February 28, 2014. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Due to the fire and to ensure visitor safety, following trail closures are in effect until further notice: Riprap, Wildcat Ridge and Rocks Mountain. The rest of the park including the Skyline remains open.
Currently 58 personnel are working to contain the fire. Resources assigned to the fire include personnel from the National Park Service, usda Forest Service, Virginia Department of Forestry, and Augusta County Fire and Rescue. Additional firefighters and equipment have been requested.
